Ford has always been known as a maker of tough, dependable cars and trucks, but few are aware that while Ford vehicles are super durable, they're also super sustainable. In fact, Ford has long been an industry leader in crafting vehicles with recycled or sustainable materials, and today, it announced that it will be advancing its sustainable technology operation to engineer plastics and foam materials for its new vehicles out of recycled carbon emissions.
Plastics make up a major part of automotive manufacture these days, but up to four percent of the world's petroleum consumption goes to making them. Manufacturing new plastics means not only using petroleum, but creating excess CO2, a major greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. By utilizing reclaimed CO2 gas that would otherwise go into the atmosphere, Ford is able to distill it down into a compound that can be used to injection mold plastics. Best of all, despite being a recycled material, these products are durable enough to be used in most places conventional plastics would, which could potentially save up to 600 million pounds of petroleum use per year.
It would seem Ford's "Go Further" slogan applies not just to its vehicle's longevity, but to Ford's own willingness to go further to deliver a quality product and help the environment in the process.
